Overview


Role Purpose

Provides leadership in the planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordination, and evaluation of the cardiovascular perfusion and open-heart program services at SLCH. Has responsibility for managing the application and development of extracorporeal circulation technology for age-appropriate support in the operating room and throughout the institution. Provides quality patient care for pediatric patients and select adult patients with emphasis on congenital cardiac anomalies and their treatment. Manages pediatric perfusion services at a pediatric ECMO center that ranks at the 90th percentile for pediatric ECMO volume in the country, with average length of time on support of two weeks, while also serving complex pediatric congenital open heart cases with an average start to case end time of 5-6 hours. In addition supports the largest Mid-West pediatric heart and lung transplantation program.


Responsibilities

  • Maintains optimal communication, close cooperation and consultation with attending physicians in the extracorporeal perfusion process.
  • Oversight of program including the heart-lung machine and extracorporeal units used during open heart surgical procedures and documentation of activities on the perfusion record.
  • Manages SLCH perfusionists including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures adequate staffing for not only cardiac cases, but other commitments of the perfusion service including autologous cell salvage, intra/inter ECMO transport, VAD support, mechanical support interventions, medical professional training, and research opportunities.
  • Ensures quality of care of the perfusion process by implementing, communicating, and/or developing standards of care, applying adherence to organizational, departmental and outside regulatory requirements and monitoring and/or measuring financial, operational and clinical outcomes against standards
  • Directs and ensures the delivery of safe, appropriate patient care through effective leadership skills. Provides mentorship and education opportunities on research and advanced mechanical support techniques to improve knowledge base of fellows, nursing and allied health care professionals, and mechanical support specialists.
  • Participates in development of the financial structure of the cardiovascular perfusion program including annual budget development, capital requests, monthly budget monitoring, daily perfusion invoice auditing, and disposable equipment management within a diverse pediatric practice. Responsible for the strategic growth and development of the cardiovascular perfusion service line and the mechanical support program in accordance with the ideals of St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
  • Develops and implements quality improvement guidelines and protocols that incorporate innovative strategies for mechanical support and best practices to achieve positive outcomes and decreased morbidity and mortality.
  • Performs all clinical duties as a SLCH pediatric perfusionist including the development of specific perfusion care plans relative to congenital physiology, heart/lung transplantation parameters, and age-appropriate needs by designing circuitry according to patient age, weight, pathology, and planned procedure.
