BJC Behavioral Health is a community health center that provides and coordinates behavioral health services for more than 8,000 seriously mentally ill adults and seriously emotionally disturbed children in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. François, Iron and Washington counties.  As an Administrative Agent of the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) serves as a major point of entry for people eligible for mental health services funded by DMH and is responsible for serving as gatekeeper to the public mental health system.  


Role Purpose

Assist the Central Access and Connect teams in completing enrollment and intake scheduling. The Peer Specialist works in conjunction with the Central Access and Connect teams of Independence Center, using their lived experience with mental illness to engage others into services. The Peer Specialist builds helping relationships between consumers that promote respect, trust, warmth and empowers individuals to make changes and decisions to enhance their lives.


  • Manage incoming Central Access calls to determine both internal and external eligibility and services.
  • Data Entry to complete enrollment and intake scheduling for hospital referrals.
  • Assist consumers with mental illness in setting goals, following through on wellness and health activities, make independent choices and take a proactive role in their treatment.
  • Conduct outreach to engage potential members into services using phones, mobile outreach and sharing lived experience of the benefits of services.
  • Promote dialog with consumers on resilience and recovery using lived experience.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
