Role Purpose

The Medical Director, Quality and Safety Programs (MD-QSP), reporting to the System Vice President/Chief Quality Officer, with shared accountability to the Vice President for Patient Care Systems, and in close collaboration with the Executive Director, Quality and Safety Programs, is responsible for providing direction and strategy to plan, coordinate, and execute quality related and safety related monitoring, reporting, and initiatives for improvement across the BJC system.


Responsibilities

  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Works with Center of Clinical Excellence (CCE), Clinical Leadership Council, and HR/BILD (BJC Institute for Learning and Development) to clearly define the path toward Quality and Safety Program (QSP) service excellence of all types for the system. Advances the behavioral changes necessary to achieve cultural transformation throughout the BJC system. Inspires a culture of QSP service excellence, ownership, and results across the enterprise. Collaborates on design, development, and deployment of QSP training to the organization in alignment with the organization’s strategy and goals. Utilizes coaching, best practices, and collaboration to improve QSP service excellence throughout the system.
  • Strategically develops the framework and protocols by which QSP initiatives are deployed across BJC. Serves as steward of QSP performance metrics and measurement methods in coordination with CCE internal and system analytics teams. Demonstrates high-level of familiarity with existing QSP measurement and reporting instruments and assesses value of each within organizational priorities. Evaluates additional measurement opportunities and methods, guides vendor relationships, and leads evaluation processes when new opportunities arise.
  • In partnership with CCE, Clinical Leadership Council, and HR/BILD, researches, recommends, and implements industry best practices, processes, and systems for measuring, reporting, and achieving best performance in QSP realms. Monitors and communicates impact of QSP measurement and reporting trends, including relevant relationships to regulatory/accreditation requirements. Serves as a subject matter expert for quality and safety, maintaining an active understanding of contemporary thinking and innovative interventions/programs for improvement. Leads efforts to identify and recommend strategies that drive improvement in partnership with other leaders.
  • In collaboration with other leadership partners, plans, develops, processes, and delivers relevant analyses and reports required to drive improvement. Assesses and analyzes results and shares findings and recommendations for improvements with leaders. Creates and monitors QSP standards. Contributes to development of training and education for leaders and staff on QSP issues.
  • As a member of a multidisciplinary team of system QSP leaders and stakeholders (including for example those in areas of employee engagement and diversity and inclusion), ensures alignment of efforts that support BJC’s culture and CREST Values. May be asked to represent BJC on regional and national committees and boards focused on QSP. Indirectly manages, mentors and leads HSO and system leaders with regards to all patient and employee quality and safety initiatives and expectations.
