The Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist Medical Center offers a full range of screening and diagnostic testing including digital mammography, Breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided core biopsy, breast MRI, stereotactic breast biopsy, and bone density scans. The Breast Health Care Center has a dedicated breast surgeon for inpatients as well as outpatients . It includes four digital mamm rooms, two ultrasound rooms, a stereo biopsy room, a mobile mammography program and an extensive outreach program. 


Overview


Role Purpose

The Genetic Counselor conducts genetic counseling, and pre- and post-testing support, if applicable for genetic testing, to patients who may be at risk for specific inherited conditions. The Genetic Counselor collects appropriate clinical and family information necessary for risk assessment, recommends and coordinates appropriate testing, and provides proper interpretation and follow up of test results. The Counselor also provides education and support to patients with a genetic diagnosis, and serves as a resource to health care providers, laboratories, and support staff regarding genetic predisposition, testing, recommended management and follow-up.


Responsibilities

  • Using patient and family medical histories, and knowledge of inheritance patterns, quantitative genetics principles and epidemiologic data, assess the risk of occurrence or reoccurrence of a genetic condition and formulate recommendations for follow-up testing and case management.
  • Meet with individual patients and families to provide genetic counseling and care coordination based on risk assessment and follow-up of test results.
  • Utilize appropriate counseling and communication techniques to identify patient needs, cultural beliefs and emotional and behavioral responses and provides education, resources, and referral to meet these needs.
  • Researches and understands hospital, local and national resources available for patients and provides information and referrals as appropriate.
  • Plans, organizes and conducts education programs on medical genetics, patient care and genetic counseling issues. Coordinates with applicable ancillary departments to ensure organizational knowledge of the program. Participates regularly in cancer conferences as a resource to oncology service line to identify potential genetic predisposition based on current patient population.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
