Overview


Role Purpose

The Design Director will be the primary design lead for the Factory, and will work closely with product, innovation, technology and clinical teams at BJC. They will build and lead a design team and guide its creative direction. They will lead design research, generate service journey maps, and use prototyping tools to convey movement and functionality of digital and physical healthcare delivery concepts and the interactions that surround them. They will clearly articulate design decisions and have a pulse on emerging trends and technology. Since the design work spans from strategy to implementation, the Design Director will scope and oversee exploratory discovery projects to identify user needs and create holistic visions for BJC’s future healthcare delivery services, as well as guide detailed production design of our products and applications. This requires experience with creating high fidelity, multimodal (not just digital) experience visions that are grounded in research insights, as well as guiding digital production teams in bringing these experiences to life. The majority of the digital experiences created are digital applications with complex workflows, so a deep knowledge of interaction design, visual design, usability, accessibility, and application development are critical in this role.


Responsibilities

  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to envision and realize the full potential of design in advancing BJC’s mission, business, and strategic objectives. Transform strategic objectives, business hypotheses, and sometimes ill-defined problems into actionable project plans to frame, understand, explore, and realize tangible clinical and business outcomes. Serve as the chief evangelist, advocate, and champion of design within and for BJC, including supporting non-design collaborators in understanding where and why new approaches are needed to enable successful innovation.
  • Build a design team inside the larger BJC organization, including developing its vision, purpose, principles, and ways of working. Hire and develop design team members.Working closely with physicians, clinical staff, and patients, you will employ rapid UX principles to quickly identify challenges and pain-points to inform brilliantly simple and clean user interfaces and unify the end-to-end experience. Identify needs and key opportunities for user input; help plan and conduct user research with contextual interviews, think-alouds, A/B tests, surveys and analysis .
  • Engage with the Product Director, Product Owners, and product teams to conceive and refine project requirements, user needs, and business needs and then develop experience strategies and drive the tactical delivery of inspiring digital designs.
  • Collaborate with process analysts, developers, and data partners to create optimized technology solutions across a range of applications.
  • Use current design techniques and methodologies to produce lo/hi fidelity prototypes and support Usability Testing to support design decisions.
