Role Purpose

The Chief Architect will lead the BJC Enterprise Architecture function that defines the underpinning technology interrelationships between business strategy, business architecture and the platforms and technologies used to deliver applications, security, data and infrastructure, thus ensuring that BJC’s business strategic priorities and goals are achieved. The Chief Architect reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer and leads a team to develop the platform and technology principles, standards, reference architectures and roadmap strategies. This position has oversight for all BJC technology project solution architecture practices and resources within BJC and manages the modernization of the BJC Technology’s Platforms and Technologies Portfolio. The Chief Architect governs Enterprise Architecture practices, in collaboration with the Business Architecture team, to integrate the business, platform & technology architectures to ensure innovate, effective and economical technology architectures can accelerate BJC business strategic priorities and goals.


  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Manage the BJC Technology Platforms & Technologies Portfolio to alignment with business architecture’s prioritized capability needs that focus on achieving strategic priorities.
  • Assess current state and develop “next” state technology platforms and technologies portfolio; continuously modernize the portfolio by developing reference architectures, roadmap strategies and innovative methods to reach the desired “next” state efficiently, economically and sustainably.
  • Manage the EA Practice in collaboration with Business Architecture leader to achieve tight integration between business strategy, business and capability models and technology platforms and technologies architectures and economics. Provide coaching and mentorship to build the team of federated Solution Architects in the principals of architecture, design thinking and rapid prototyping to drive building scalable, available, performant, resilient, secure systems with site reliability engineering/service continuity built into the design.
  • Set architecture vision and principles to shape platform and technology decisions so decisions support strategic priorities; build “architecture” mindset in decision makers and measure EA’s value proposition in Business Outcomes.
  • Support Project Delivery (provide and/or review solution designs) to ensure technology producers are leveraging, and benefiting from, the architecture reference architectures that accelerate solution delivery.
