The Patient Safety and Clinical Quality team collaborates with all levels of leadership to ensure key methods are utilized to improve all aspects of patient safety, clinical quality, and performance improvement.


Role Purpose

The Director of Clinical Excellence oversees Patient Safety, Quality, Risk, Compliance, Performance Improvement, and Data Analytics. The Director provides strategic oversight and ensures methods are used to improve all aspects of each area in partnership with national experts. The role will report to the Chief Medical Officer and will work directly with the Executive Team to ensure transparency, awareness, remove barriers and implement sustainable actions using Lean principles. This role will be responsible for building a culture that foster continuous improvements at all levels.


  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Develops Lean enterprise-wide program and deployment elements pertaining to organizational capability, training curriculum, program governance, roles and responsibilities, standard work and deployment effectiveness.
  • Develops and implements a framework for an integrated system-wide approach to Performance Improvement, Risk Management and Patient Safety.
  • Collaborates with the Patient Safety and Risk Manager and Acting Chief Medical Officer to oversee hospital-wide investigations related to patient harm, injury or near miss.
  • Develops and implements a framework for an integrated approach to Patient Safety, Quality and Risk Management, Performance Improvement, Data Analytics, and Practice Research/Education.
  • BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
