Role Purpose

Responsible for providing strategic leadership of all fundraising and development efforts to significantly increase funding for the hospital. The Chief Development Officer reports directly to the Hospital President and works closely with Vice Presidents, clinical leaders at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM), and the Foundation Board of Trustees to identify fundraising needs and philanthropic funding priorities for the hospital and pediatric departments throughout WUSM. Additionally, this individual is responsible for leading a team of over 30 including Directors, Managers and professional staff.


  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Establishes strategic direction for all development efforts to create a sustainable fundraising program for the institution and develops strategies for increasing philanthropic support. This includes individual donors, foundation and corporate donors, planned giving, international fundraising and special events.
  • Collaborates with the Foundation Board of Trustees to promote awareness of the Hospital’s mission and vision while aligning fundraising with the overall Hospital goals. Devises appropriate annual fundraising goals and monitors progress on a regular basis to maximize revenues while consistently providing transparent communication to key stakeholders.
  • Sets ongoing performance metrics for current employees including assigning work, managing & evaluating performance, conducting professional development plans, mentoring, etc. Attract and retain employees to ensure the productivity and actions of the group meet/support the overall goals of the department.
  • Create sounds business and investment plans and budgets that ensure an appropriate return on investment by managing resources and outcomes effectively. Ensure ethical policies, practices and procedures related to solicitation, financial reporting, compliance and donor stewardship are followed in accordance with industry standards.
  • Manages a portfolio of principal giving donors and prospects ensuring appropriate stewardship, recognition, and communication.
