BJC Behavioral Health is a community health center that provides and coordinates behavioral health services for more than 6,000 seriously mentally ill adults and seriously emotionally disturbed children in St. Louis City, St. Louis County, St. François, Iron and Washington counties.  As an Administrative Agent of the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH) serves as a major point of entry for people eligible for mental health services funded by DMH and is responsible for serving as gatekeeper to the public mental health system.  BJC Behavioral Health also administers the BJC Employee Assistance Program ad Behavioral Health Partners, an administrative services organization.


Role Purpose

Provides psychiatric rehabilitation services to adults who are diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness to assist with their recovery by utilizing the Clubhouse Model evidence based practice approach and applying the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs. On-call responsibility by participating in the after-hours crisis phone rotation. Reviews documentation for compliance and quality. Provides feedback to Supervisor and training/support to co-workers. Assists with oversight for practicum students based on the collaborative agreement with the university.


  • Uses clinical knowledge to effectively build genuine relationships with members through the work ordered day, working side by side and in partnership. Identifies individual members' strengths and talents and offers opportunities for meaningful work in order to improve self-confidence and self-esteem. Assumes bottom-line responsibility for engaging members in the successful completion of all unit work. Assists members to achieve positive outcomes in the following areas, including but not limited to: employment, education, housing, social, legal, substance use, physical health and mental health.
  • Works independently to provide effective placement management to help members achieve their vocational and academic goals through Transitional, Supported and Independent employment and Supported Education. Fosters an atmosphere of belief in all member's ability to work and further their education. Communicates professionally, effectively and timely with employers, ensuring their needs are being met, coverage is being provided when applicable, and appropriate support is being given to the member.
  • Assists members in accessing resources to meet their needs. Coordinates services with other care providers in the community. Provides phone and mobile outreach to members who are isolating in the community or in the hospital. Participates in and assists in planning and promotion of the Evening, Weekend, and Holiday social program.
  • Uses clinical judgement to effectively partner with members to set goals related to their mental and physical health in order to make lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco cessation. Creates a culture of wellness by educating, motivating, and celebrating.
  • Uses clinical judgement to effectively partner with members to achieve their goals by creating and updating an individualized recovery plan with measurable goals and objectives. Quarterly completes the Daily Living Activities-20 (DLA) assessment tool Documents progress toward meeting goals based on the Department of Mental Health (DMH) and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) requirements. Provides crisis intervention as needed. Has on-call responsibility by participating in the after-hours crisis phone rotation. Based on program need, may be asked to assist with the following: Clinical assessments and plans, review documentation and provide training/support to co-workers, and fulfill the role of Field Instructor for practicum students based on the collaborative agreement with the university.
