Overview


Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care to hematology/oncology patients who require a high level of clinical expertise.


Responsibilities

  • Participates in activities that promote safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development and life long learning.
  • Understands the unique learning needs of patients and families who are experiencing a life crisis. Educates patients and their families on disease process, management of illness/injury/treatment, support resources, infection prevention techniques, and essential daily tasks to prepare for discharge.
  • Evaluates patient's response to complex critical treatment modalities and modifies plan of care accordingly throughout the patient's stay.
  • Provides care to acutely and critically ill pediatric hematology/oncology patients and stem cell/BMT patients in a highly technical and ongoing monitoring environment. Educates families on diagnoses, management, support resources, infection prevention techniques, and essential daily tasks to prepare for discharge.
  • Provide complex nursing care (assessments, monitoring, interventions, and education) for pediatric hematology/oncology patients and stem cell/BMT patients, including; - administer chemotherapy, biotherapy and supportive care within guidelines of specific protocols, including CART-T cells, NK cell, MIBG, etc. - verify and validate chemotherapy protocols, orders, and chemotherapy dosing - transfuse blood products - administer antimicrobial therapy - provide electrolyte and fluid balance - provide psychosocial support - obtain research specimens and pharmacokinetic samples
