BJC Corporate Health Services, the occupational medicine organization within BJC HealthCare, externally supports employers and employees of the St. Louis metropolitan area with three full-service BarnesCare clinics that provide expert physicals, surveillance, injury/exposure evaluation and treatment. Specialized services include contract management of work-related injury care for BJC hospitals, independent medical exams, traveler's health, on-site services, care management, toxicology support and two 24/7 hotlines for body substance exposures and emergency room coordination of work-related care. BJC Corporate Health Services provides occupational health support for BJC employees through on-site and virtual oversight including administration of workers' compensation. BJC Corporate Health Services also manages the BJC WellAware fitness center, which extends fitness opportunities with on-site classes at BJC hospitals throughout the metropolitan area. In 2010, BJC Corporate Health Services became the first and only St. Louis occupational medicine provider quality-certified by the National Association of Occupational Health Providers.

Role Purpose

Occupational physicians have special expertise in the prevention, evaluation and management of conditions that are either commonly or uniquely experienced by workers or persons exposed to hazardous environmental agents in addition to numerous musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. The OM physician must communicate and inspire confidence in people of all levels (patients, clients and staff) . OM physicians ensures optimal care and promotes safety of patients.


  • Diagnoses, treats and manages the medical care of occupational and environmental illnesses and injuries including cases referred to other specialists, in accordance with current Occupational Medicine standards.
  • Knowledgeable regarding regulatory or company-specific protocols. Performs required physicals and/or clinical examinations in compliance with regulations, including ADA, conducts clinical evaluations to assess level of impairment and fitness for duty.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation of all patient evaluations, examinations and treatments in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Processes general knowledge of the toxic properties of materials used by employees as well as the potential hazards and stressors of work processes.
  • Translates functional impairment assessments into a safe “work ability,” based on a general knowledge of work-site operations.
