Since 1981, Independence Center has focused on providing programs and services that assist adults in the St. Louis metropolitan area with serious and persistent mental illnesses to live and work in the community, independently through rehabilitation, employment, education, social and housing opportunities.  In collaboration with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and BJC HealthCare, the Center also provides clinical, case management and partial hospitalization services.

Role Purpose

The Manager of Finance position is accountable for the financial operations of the Independence Center, to include the ongoing development and active management of a financial operational strategy for the company as a whole and each revenue department, metrics tied to that strategy, and the ongoing development and monitoring of: control systems designed to preserve company assets and report accurate financial results.


  • Provides department administration beginning with safeguarding IC fiscal integrity by advocating, developing, and maintaining department/company fiscal policies and procedures and implementing best financial practices and approved strategic plans. Supervises company assets and liabilities, develops and implements company financial and tax strategies.
  • Supervises services billing, Accounts Receivable, and Accounts Payable; manages financial software programs, bank and brokerage accounts, capital request procedures, and annual budget; ensures financial internal controls, revenue, expense, and tax reporting and analysis.
  • Provides relationships with BJC Finance Department, Banks and Brokerage Firms, and Accounting Firms; participates as a member of the Executive Management Team; as directed, joins and participates with organizations that relate to the economic security of IC.
  • Provides negotiation assistance and financial modeling for capital acquisitions, business and strategic planning, and service-line evaluation.
  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
