Role Purpose

The role will have a unique opportunity to provide leadership in an area critical to the Foundation’s overall fundraising success by developing and implementing annual and long-range plans to cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and major donor prospects. This position reports directly to the Executive Director of Philanthropy and provides overall management of the Foundation’s Major Gifts and Gift & Estate Planning programs to attract donors at $10,000/year+ and is responsible for leading strategies and activities designed to engage, cultivate, solicit and acknowledge the donors of estate and planned gifts in order to support the work of the hospital. The Director, Major Gifts will also be responsible for leading and inspiring a team of major gift fundraisers while working collaboratively with colleagues across the Foundation.


  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Partners with senior staff, volunteers, and donors to set ambitious annual and long term financial and activity goals for the Major Gifts program and works with the Stewardship and Donor Relations team to develop meaningful recognition and stewardship programs for major donors. Ensures intimate alignment with the Gift & Estate Planning team to identify and cultivate major donors who also have the capacity to make a planned gift. Additionally, manages a personal pool of donors and prospects to meet and exceed fundraising goals.
  • Work with Corporate Partnerships, Direct Marketing and Events teams to identify and implement donor mitigation strategies from other fundraising portfolios to the Major Gifts and Gift & Estate Planning programs and vice versa. Ensure the Information Management systems of the Foundation are fully utilized to effectively enter, track and retrieve Major Gift information
  • Lead Campaign Cabinet and other volunteers, who will assist with the development of strategy, prospect identification, rating and donor solicitation.
  • Committed to ongoing professional development of self and team members through reading current literature, attending professional meetings, participating in professional associations and developing working relationships with professionals at other institutions. Collect comparative data and program information for benchmarking purposes.
